Custom mixing paint

A quick question for those of you that have had the BASF training.
What does BC101 (Flop Control) do for a mixture? When do you need it and when can you leave it out?
The same question for BC100 (clear).

Clear Coat Drying Flat
Posted by craigbrown @ Wed Aug 13, 2008 7:54 am
On severl jobs I have had my clear coat dry flat. I know that humidity and a rough surface can be factors in this but in this last case neither of these seemed to be the cause. It did buff out to a nice shine. In most cases I did not hit with blending solvent as I did the entire bumper and the job looked good when wet. It is not a bad batch of clear coat as it only happens once in 50 or so bumpers and I only purchase a gallon of CC at a time and do not think I have had this happen more than once on the same gallon.
My question is what other factors might cause this? Is there something you do to prevent this from happening?

Does anyone know what the color enhancer is by Dvelup? I tried it and it works pretty well on matallics, but it's expensive. $85 for 32oz. I would like to find out where to get it cheaper. Check it out http://dvelup.com
Thank You,
Jason

Iwata vs SATA
Posted by joleinik @ Sun Jul 27, 2008 2:36 pm
Has anyone used the Iwata brand spray guns? I am looking at purchaseing the LPH400-LVX or the LPH400-LVB. I have sprayed with SATA guns for the last 15 years and overall I have been very please. Rumor has it IWATA guns are starting to make a dent in SATA's sales due to the excellent metallic control and up to 40% reduction in paint required to cover the same area as a SATA. Whats everyones thoughts on the subject?

Secondary Paint Code
Posted by craigbrown @ Thu Jul 24, 2008 10:23 pm
Today I was doing a favor for a mechanic at one of my customers. He want me to fill and shot the rear bumper. Fairly easy job.............................................if I could find the paint code. It was a two tone car and I easily found the primary paint code. Related colors in SmartColor did not have it, I called BASF and they didn't have it. I called the local Mecedes dealer and the codes he could find were not it. The chip books were of no use, the car was way older than the books I have. Tonight I did a google search and found a web site that had a chart of all of the colors used that year. I think one of them is the color I need and that code was not on the vehicle.
Does anyone have other options for this? It is a pain in the a-- when you can not get the code. It takes me 3-4 times as long to do these vehicles without a good way of getting the code.

Plastic Welding
Posted by craigbrown @ Tue Jul 22, 2008 10:50 pm
I asked another operator today how he removed the excess plastic after plastic welding. It takes me too long to sand it down, and when I do it always seems to remove plastic around the weld making sanding your repair down even more difficult. He uses a 3M wheel model number 9099-BS.

Low and behold I actually had one in my trailer as I purchased it for rust removal. I put this wheel in my cordless drill and at well less than half speed this thing really takes the excess plastic off and down level with the bumper in hardly no time. If you don't have one of these I would suggest getting one. Most home improvement stores carry them.
